The Animals

Devon Wildlife Centre is unique – there are no other Centres in Devon, which care for injured wildlife and also allows visitor access, at the same time emphasising the educational aspect.

Red Squirrel

Shortly, we will be part of the Red Squirrel Conservation programme. Red squirrels have declined in numbers in recent times due partly to loss of habitat and partly due to their susceptibility to disease such as squirrel pox. Captive breeding programmes have been set up to help increase numbers in the wild, and the Centre aims to take part in this programme.

Olive and Teasel were brought into the hospital as orphans, a week old and bottle-fed. Whilst Olive has become socialised, Teasel will be released to the site from which he originated.

Tawny Owl

Tarragon has a cataract in one eye and cannot be released to the wild. Sage and Thyme had wing injuries and are being rehabilitated

Weasel

Weasel

Wiz came as a tiny orphan and quickly became socialised. He loves running up and down and showing off to visitors. He also loves hiding in the long grass in his enclosure, so may be hard to spot!

Grey Squirrels

Full of fun and very entertaining, grey squirrels that cannot find a good home are looked after at the Centre. They cannot be released to the wild by law.

Badger

The badger is too old to be returned to the
wild (although less than 5 years old). She has
very quickly adapted to life at the Centre and
is happy and content in her retirement.

Each year around 1200-1500 animals come to the Hospital and now may pass through the centre.
